CALGARY -- The No. 5 nationally ranked Manitoba Bisons have had a flair for the dramatics over the last two weeks, but continue to find ways to win games. On Saturday against the Dinos, down 17-16 in the final five minutes, the Herd blocked a punt and scored on the following drive, en route to a 22-17 win.
The victory gives Manitoba their first 4-0 start in 17 years. They stand atop the Canada West standings, ahead of 2-2 Regina, UBC and Alberta by four points, with a game in hand on the T-Birds and Golden Bears. It was also the Herd's first win on the road against Calgary in ten years.
Down by as much as nine entering the fourth, Manitoba grinded out a number of drives on both sides of the ball.
A late third quarter interception from veteran
Nick Conway led to the first of two fourth quarter rushing scores from quarterback
Jackson Tachinski, narrowing Calgary's lead to 17-15. Tachinski got the edge on the play, surging 14 yards down the left sideline and into the corner of the end zone.
Conway was all over the field for the Herd, adding four tackles, while linebacker
Dario Macchia had a career high nine tackles, and defensive lineman
Jordan Friesen added his first career U SPORTS sack.
The Herd's aggressiveness paid off again with five minutes to play.
Daniel Conway, younger brother of Nick, stretched out from the left side to block a Joel Pipke punt, with the Bisons taking over at the Dinos 36.
The Herd nearly got to Pipke multiple times in the game, with special teams coordinator
Sean Oleksewycz drawing up an excellent game plan.
"We did a tremendous job on special teams all day," he said.
"Dan had an opportunity on a half pressure and made a play. If he did not get it, Ishe [Matanga] would have gotten there as well. Hats off to those guys for working the prep."
The following drive, with 4:16 to play, consisted of six straight running plays split between Tachinski, running back
Breydon Stubbs (who scored his Canada West-leading fifth rushing touchdown to open the scoring for Manitoba) and fellow back
Shakur Harris. A total of 24 of the team's rushing yards on the drive came from Harris, who amassed 69 yards in the game on just eight carries. Over the last two contests, he's averaged 8.8 yards per carry, with 127 yards on just 13 rushes.
As a team, Manitoba ran for 237 yards, led by
Sean Rowe (left tackle),
Giordano Vaccaro (left guard),
Mark Rauhaus (centre),
Matt Stokman (right guard) and
Victor Olaniran (right tackle). The Bisons are one of only two teams in Canada West that have ran for more than 200 yards per game (211.8).
Tachinsk capped the drive off with a four-yard quarterback keeper for the game-winning score. Following a lead block from Stubbs, Tachinski charged up the middle of the Dinos defence, breaking past contact and reaching his 6'4" frame past the goal line for the memorable score.
Tachinski now has three rushing majors on the season, and nine over the last two. His 15 regular season rushing touchdowns are tied for sixth-most in school history. He added 132 yards through the air.
"
Daniel Conway came up with a huge play, and our team just fed off the momentum," said Tachinski.
"The offensive line was very aggressive and we just marched it down the rest of the way and it felt good."
A two-point convert attempt to
De Shawn Le Jour was extremely close, but called short at the one. Calgary then drove the field and had a chance to win on a Dom Britton toss into the corner of the end zone from 18 yards out, but veteran
Jarrett Alcaraz got enough of the ball to change the angle, and Jack Gutek couldn't hold on in bounds.
The Bisons are back at home on Saturday at 5 pm against Regina, entering the midway mark of the regular season at 4-0 for the first time since winning the Vanier Cup in 2007.
"It's cool to be undefeated to this point, and that's a cool little fact, but we can't get too ahead of ourselves," added Tachinski.
"We just need to focus on the week at hand, which is Regina."
