FTB: No. 9 ranked Bisons beat No. 8 UBC 33-10 for first road win against T-Birds in 11 years

Manitoba's defence forced five turnovers, and Vaughan Lloyd had a career-high 143 yards receiving.

VANCOUVER -- For the first time in 11 years, the No. 9 nationally ranked Manitoba Bisons have defeated the No. 8 UBC Thunderbirds on the road, winning 33-10 in impressive fashion. It's the second week in a row that the Herd have beat a nationally ranked conference rival.

The hosts scored the game's first ten points and led by two scores after 15 minutes, but Manitoba answered, rattling off 33 straight to win.

The turning point in the contest came five minutes into the second quarter. Down 10-3, Bisons quarterback Jackson Tachinski -- who threw for 286 yards and two scores -- connected with high school teammate Vaughan Lloyd from 81 yards for the latter's longest touchdown as a Bison.

Despite pressure in his face, Tachinski calmly rolled to his left, delivering an off-balance dime to Lloyd in stride.

The grab was one of a Manitoba-best five on the day, with Lloyd's 143 yards also being a career-high. The Vincent Massey grad's two best games have come at UBC, with his 81 yards on the ground in the playoffs last year being a personal best.

In his last two games against the T-Birds, Lloyd has amassed 241 all-purpose yards and two scores. He had the grab of the game in the second half on Friday, hauling in a pass on the sideline with a defensive back draped all over him. The fourth-year leads Manitoba with 179 yards receiving and two scores after two games.

A safety gave Manitoba the lead later in the second, and they added two more touchdowns in the final five minutes to enter the break up 26-10.

Tachinski plunged in from one yard out on the final play of the first half, and prior to that, he connected with Jake Roger from 22 yards out for six.

The reception in the corner of the end zone was the first in the U SPORTS career of Roger, a former CJFL standout with the Winnipeg Rifles with exceptional hands, who completely transformed his body after high school to become a dynamic play maker.

Breydon Stubbs added a six-yard major in the second half to round out the scoring. He finished the day with 105 rushing yards, and leads Canada West with 214 on the ground through two games.

It's the first time in Stubbs' career that he's gone over 100 yards in two straight contests, and he also leads the conference with three rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, Manitoba forced five turnovers, paced by interceptions from Stephen Adamopoulos, Nick Thomas and Sebastien Reid. Manitoba also recovered a fumble and forced UBC to turn the ball over on downs.

It's the second week in a row that the Bisons defence has forced five turnovers in a game.

Thomas' interception was his first as a Bison, while Adamopoulos recorded his fourth, and Reid got his eighth. Reid is now tied for sixth all time in career picks for the Bisons. With 3.5 tackles, Thomas also entered the top 20 in school history in career tackles, with 103.5.

Manitoba enters week three tied atop the conference standings with Regina, as the only undefeated teams left, at 2-0. They welcome Alberta to town for homecoming this Saturday at 2 pm, looking to go 3-0 for the second time in the last four years.
