Bears maul Rams to improve to 2-2

Efficient offence propels Bears to 30-6 win over Regina

EDMONTON  - Racing out to a 17-0 lead at the half â€” highlighted by a 73-yard rushing touchdown from Matthew Peterson â€” the U SPORTS #9 ranked Golden Bears improved to 2-2 with a 24-point home win over Regina.

Alberta finished with a 252-92 advantage in rushing yards, with Ope Oshinubi adding 78 yards to Peterson's game-high 116. The Bears also forced five Regina turnovers (three third downs, one interception, one fumble), not committing a single turnover themselves.

With the win, Alberta jumps back into second in Canada West with a 2-2 record, while the loss drops the Rams to 2-2.

Bears starting pivot Eli Hetlinger finished with an efficient 15/22 passing line for 141 yards and one major score. Seven different Bears finished with at least one reception, led by Chevy Thomas' 49 yards on four catches. Erik Torjhelm caught the lone Hetlinger passing TD late in the fourth quarter, which pushed the Bears lead to 30-0.

Oshinubi added the third Bears TD midway through the second quarter in a contest that was lopsided throughout. The Bears held possession of the ball for over 36 minutes, averaging 6.4 yards per play. Alberta's all-time leading point scorer Jonathan Giustini was perfect on Friday night, making all six of his kicks, including three field goals in the win. A costly late hit on a Giustini punt early in the second half was also a momentum shifter, taking time off the clock and adding more points on the board for the Bears.

Regina's offence was unable to generate long drives, finishing with 365 yards, a majority of which coming late in the second half. The Rams had just 132 offensive yards in the first two quarters, including just 34 yards on the ground. Starting QB Noah Pelletier finshed the contest as the Rams leading passer and rusher, throwing for 225 yards and adding 25 yards on the ground. Renzel Arinaza caught Pelletier's only TD pass with under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Alberta will head east next week to take on the 1-3 Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night, while the Rams will visit the top-ranked Manitoba Bisons.
