VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's soccer team defeated the University of Saskatchewan, 1-0, Oct. 26 in the quarterfinal round of the Canada West playoffs at Centennial Stadium.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Strong defensive play results in scoreless first half
- Though the Vikes seemed to keep the ball in Saskatchewan's defensive half for most of the first half, the Huskies defence matched the Vikes' intensity, making critical defensive stops to keep the game scoreless. Sophie Fingarson nearly broke through in the 31st minute for the Vikes on a shot from inside the box, but a Husky defender managed to get a foot on the shot to redirect its path to just wide of the goal.
Fingarson breaks the tie
- Though the Vikes came close to getting on the board early in the second half, it wasn't until the 74th minute that a goal was recorded. Brianne McLeish got things started for the Vikes, when her initial shot was saved by the Saskatchewan goalkeeper and went out of bounds for a Vikes corner. Ruby Nicholas took the corner, and served the ball right to the head of Sophie Fingarson, who knocked it to the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead, which would hold until the final whistle.
Vikes flip the script
- The Vikes and Huskies met in the Canada West playoffs for the second-straight season. Saskatchewan defeated the Vikes in the bronze medal game one season ago, but the Vikes have emerged victorious in this year's meeting.
FROM THE FIELD - Head coach Tracy David
"That game was really close. Credit to Saskatchewan. We knew how tough they were going to be, and they proved that in spades with how tough it was to break them down and their aggressiveness and physicality. I thought maybe we were able to wear them down a little bit through the run of play. Thankfully we were able to convert one of our corners, that was really great. I'm really proud of the team for getting the job done, and now we're on to the next part of the journey."
WORTH NOTING

- The Vikes out-shot the Huskies 16-7, and 8-3 in shots on goal.
- Victoria improves to 8-2-5 on the year after a 1-0 start to postseason play, and will advance to the Canada West Final Four for the second-straight year.
