Vikes defeat Dinos to advance to Canada West gold medal match

Calgary, Alta. - The University of Victoria women's soccer team shut out top prairie seed University of Calgary, 1-0, Nov. 1 at McMahon Stadium in the Canada West semifinals to advance to their first conference gold medal match since 2017.

Scorey scores for early Vikes lead
  • The game-winner came in the 12th minute for the Vikes. A throw-in from Adrianna Hilton bounced between Calgary players and Sophie Murphy, but it was Murphy who got a handle on it and drove into the box. A quick pass towards centre was met with a strike by Taiya Scorey that beat the diving Calgary goalkeeper to the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
Lidstone, Vikes defence keep Dinos out of the net in second half
  • Kayley Lidstone tallied six saves in net for the Vikes in the second half, helping the Vikes to close out the final 45 minutes and secure the 1-0 win.
WORTH NOTING
  • Taiya Scorey's goal marks her third of the year.
  • Kayley Lidstone tallied seven saves in the shutout, including six in the second half. The clean sheet marks the fourth-straight and sixth overall for Lidstone and the Vikes this season.
  • The Vikes have secured a berth to the U SPORTS women's soccer championship. The appearance will be the first since the Vikes hosted the event in 2019, but it is the first time the program has earned one of the two Canada West berths since 2017.
  • The win marked the 200th overall (Canada West regular season and conference + national playoffs) win for head coach Tracy David at the helm of the Vikes women's soccer program.
  • The Vikes move to 9-2-5 on the year with the win.
