CURL: Host Alberta perfect after Day 1 of CW Championships
January 31, 2020
EDMONTON - The host Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas each earned a pair of wins on Day 1 of the 2020 Canada West Curling Championships at Saville Community Sports Centre on Friday.
The Alberta women earned an opening 10-1 win over Lethbridge, finishing with a 10-3 win over Regina. Both the men and women's standings were identical following play on Friday.
The Golden Bears defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 8-6, before beating the Victoria Vikes 7-1. Alberta trailed Lethbridge 6-3 after five, before scoring five-straight singles, including four-straight steals of one, to close out the game.
The Bears opened Draw 2 against Regina with six-straight steals, giving them 10-straight ends with a steal.
"That's probably the longest run of steals I have ever had. In curling, you do your best to make your opponent's shots tough, and sometimes you get fortunate and they have a few misses," said Golden Bears skip Karsten Sturmay.
"It's definitely not the start we wanted, falling down 6-3 after five. But I really think it shows the toughness and mental resiliency our team has. Sometimes you run into adversity, and the mark of a good teams is your ability to overcome that."
The Brandon Bobcats were the only other team to finish Day 1 with unblemished records, as both Bobcat teams earned wins over Lethbridge in Draw 2.
Both Regina Cougars teams began the championship with 1-1 records, placing them third in the table after Day 1. Regina earned wins over Victoria in Draw 1 in each gender, before falling to Alberta in Draw 2.
Both Victoria (0-1) and Lethbridge (0-2) are looking for their first wins after each team went winless.
"You could see the level of play increase as the day went on, so I'm expecting some tight games tomorrow," continued Sturmay. "Hopefully we come out a bit sharper, play a bit better, and continue to get good results."
Draw 3 starts at 11:00 a.m. at Saville, with Regina taking on Lethbridge, and Brandon taking on Victoria.
Draw 4 is set for 4:00 p.m., as Alberta and Brandon square off, alongside Victoria vs Lethbridge.
