Tie Breaking Procedures
Final league standings, at the conclusion of league play, shall be based on each teams winning percentage. Only Canada West league games are to be considered for tie breaking procedures. The tie breaking criteria are in the following prioritized order:
Two Teams Tied:
- 1. Win/Loss record in head-to-head competition.
- 2. Win/Loss record versus common opponents.
- 3. Each team's RPI ranking.
- 4. Points difference in head-to-head competition between the tied teams.
- 5. Points difference using all games versus common opponents.
- 6. Points difference using all games played.
- 7. Coin flip conducted by the Canada West Managing Director.
Three or More Teams Tied:
- Use the same procedure as two-teams tied. Once one team has been separated from the tied group, go back to step one with the remaining tied team(s).
Playoff Format
The top 12 teams advance to playoffs based on their league standings using win/loss record, as well as, the tie breaking procedure outlined above, if needed.
The 12 teams are then seeded 1 to 12 based on their RPI ranking.
If any of the 12 teams are tied in the RPI seeding process, then ties are again broken using the tie breaking procedures as listed in the section above.
RPI Calculation
RPI = 35% team winning percentage (WP) x 1.1 away win + 0.9 home win, 40% opponents’ average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents’ opponent’s average winning percentage (OOWP).
2024 Canada West Men's Basketball Championships
The 2024 Canada West Men’s Basketball Championships will be a single site, single elimination tournament hosted by University of Manitoba from Feb. 21 to 25.
- Day 1: 12 vs 5; 9 vs 8; 11 vs 6; 10 vs 7
- Day 2 – 4 vs winner (12 vs 5); 1 vs winner (9 vs 8); 3 vs winner (11 vs 6); 2 vs winner (10 vs 7)
- Day 3 – Off
- Day 4 – Semifinals
- Day 5 – Bronze & Gold Medal Games
- NOTE: Order of games are subject to change and will be determined once the seeding is set following the regular season. However, the integrity of the bracket is required to match any switch to order.
