CURL: Host Regina takes down defending champs, but falls to Brandon in Day 1 of CW Championships

REGINA - The Regina Cougars women's team started the day with a huge victory, defeating the Alberta Pandas, who are the Canada West defending champions, to a score of 9-8. The game came down to the final rock, as Regina skip Krystal Englot's clutch hammer throw scored two points to win the game.
The women's team could not repeat their success against the Brandon Bobcats however, as they lost 6-4 in Draw 2 to split their first two games. Brandon scored two in the eighth end to take the lead and held onto it through the final two ends.
The Regina Cougars men's team defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 8-3 in Draw 2, starting the tournament with a spotless 1-0 record. The Cougars scored five points in the second end, riding the early lead to the win.
In Draw 1 on the men's side, the Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns to start the tournament with a win. The Alberta men's team scored three in the fifth end to make it a 6-6 game. They then proceeded to score four-straight steals of one to take the game 10-6.
The UBC Thunderbirds men's team defeated the Brandon Bobcats in Draw 1 to a score of 9-5. The Thunderbirds had a good third end, scoring 3 points. Brandon could not make a comeback and dropped their opening game of the tournament.
The Lethbridge Pronghorns men's team took down Brandon 13-6 in Draw 2, avoiding going winless on the opening day. A big four-point fourth end made a huge difference for the Pronghorns in the game.
After the first day, Regina and Alberta are the only remaining undefeated men's teams, each with a 1-0 record. Lethbridge and UBC split their opening games and are standing at 1-1. Brandon is at 0-2 after dropping their opening games.
On the women's side, Brandon is the only undefeated team, spotting a 1-0 record. Regina is at 1-1 and Alberta is 0-1 after only playing in one game.
The Alberta women's team will take on the Brandon Bobcats to start the second day, with Draw 3 starting at 9:00 a.m. Alberta will then have a rematch against Regina in Draw 4 at 2:00 p.m. In Draw 5, which will being at 7:00 p.m., the Cougars will have a rematch against Brandon.
The men's teams are back at it starting at 2 p.m., when Lethbridge takes on Regina and Alberta goes against Brandon. In Draw 5, Alberta and Regina will face off while Lethbridge takes on UBC at 7:00 p.m.
