Alberta, Calgary atop the table after Day 2 of CW Curling
EDMONTON – Sunday morning is set up to be full of intrigue, as both Canada West banners and spots at the U SPORTS Championship are still up for grabs at Saville.
The host Golden Bears and Pandas sit atop the standings with matching 4-0 records, and have the simplest path to more CW titles; a win over the Calgary Dinos on Sunday morning. The Pandas are the sole team who have already secured a spot at nationals, while the Bears will need a win in Draw 5 to fully clinch a spot in Fredericton.
The Dinos sit second in both the men and women’s standings, owning 3-1 records. The Regina Cougars, who earned a 12-5 win over Calgary in Draw 3, sit in a tie for second on the men’s side. A Regina win over Lethbridge (0-4) coupled with a Dinos loss would send Regina to nationals, while matching Regina and Calgary wins would send the two teams to a tie-breaker on Sunday afternoon.
The Calgary women escaped a scare in Draw 4, earning a thrilling 10-9 win in extra ends over the Victoria Vikes. The Dinos led 9-4 after seven ends, before allowing Vikes steals in three-consecutive ends to send the game to an extra.
The tie-breaker scenarios on the women’s side are more complex, with Victoria and Regina trailing Calgary with matching 2-2 records. The Cougars take on the 1-3 Lethbridge Pronghorns, while the Vikes get the winless Brandon Bobcats in the final draw on Sunday morning.
While there won’t be a tie-breaker to determine a champion on Sunday, the tie-breaker will be used to determine the second U SPORTS Championship berth. Head-to-head record amongst teams tied will be the primary factor used to determine who meets in the tie-breaker game, with accumulative last stone draw distance being used second.
Draw 5 of the 2024 CW Championship gets underway at 8:00 a.m. MT on Sunday, with potential tie-breaker games scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
