Dinos announce coaching additions for 2023-24 season
Coming off a strong showing in their first season back on the ice in over 40 years, the Calgary Dinos curling program will add to its coaching staff for the upcoming season, head coach Jocelyn Peterman announced Thursday.
CALGARY – Coming off a strong showing in their first season back on the ice in over 40 years, the Calgary Dinos curling program will add to its coaching staff for the upcoming season, head coach Jocelyn Peterman announced Thursday.
Peterman – the UCalgary grad and 2022 Olympian – will move into a program director role, maintaining oversight of the program and continuing to work with the team in a skill development role.
Assistant coach and fellow Olympian Brett Gallant will also shift to a skill development coach, while assistant coaches Laine Peters and Heather Rogers will now serve as the head coaches of the men's and women's programs, respectively.
The Dinos will also add two familiar faces to the bench, as Derek Bowyer and Tyson Toews will join the squad as assistant coaches after competing for the Scarlet & Gold last season. Bowyer was named a First Team All-Canadian as a third, while Toews played a vital role as a lead in the Dinos return to action, helping Calgary to a silver medal at the Canada West Championships and a berth to nationals.
"We had a great first season last year and we're looking forward to this upcoming season," Peterman said. "Last year, however, we only competed at Canada West and U Sports. This year, the team will be competing together full time on the Alberta Curling Tour that lasts from September through April, in addition to the university events. With that in mind, these coaching changes will be essential to give our athletes the coaching and leadership they need and to continue to establish the standard of our program."
This year's season is set to get underway at the end of the month, with this year's Canada West Championships scheduled for Jan. 19-21 in Edmonton.
