Vikes claim best record after weekend wins over UBC
Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria women’s field hockey team claimed their fifth-straight Canada West title with a 1-0 shutout of the University of British Columbia, Oct. 22, in the final game of the Canada West season on the Lynne “Buzz” Beecroft Field.
Vikes’ goalkeeper Anais Chace allowed no goals in 60 minutes in net for the home side, while Thunderbirds’ Hannah Rumble started in goal and Robyn Goh took over in the second quarter.
The Vikes were the first side to get a look at scoring, making a run in the final 10 seconds of the first quarter. Charging in to the circle, Jaden Dawson got the ball in front of the UBC goal, but Rumble kicked the ball away as the buzzer sounded to keep the game scoreless.
Dawson would get her chance to score in the second quarter, drawing Goh to the left side of the net and sending the ball to the back right corner for the 1-0 UVic lead in the 25th minute.
Less than a minute later, the Vikes were awarded a penalty corner and nearly doubled their lead on a shot from Libby Hogg, but a save from Goh allowed the ‘Birds to clear the ball and keep the home side’s lead to one.
With no change in score in the third quarter, UBC looked to make a final push in the fourth. Izzy Frazer sent the ball ahead to Elizabeth Jefferson, who got UBC into the circle with 6:30 to play in the game. However, the Vikes were able to clear the ball to maintain their lead.
With 17.2 seconds on the clock, a penalty corner was awarded to UBC. Looking to equalize, Jenna Goodman fired off a shot, but Chace was able to make the save and seal the win for the Vikes, 1-0.
The Vikes claim the Canada West banner with an overall record of 4-1-3 on the season, while UBC ends the year at 3-4-1.
