GOLF: UBC leads the way after Day 1 of CW Championships

SQUAMISH, B.C. - The host UBC Thunderbirds are lead the way after Day 1 at the Canada West Golf Championships at the Squamish Valley Golf Club.
UBC is leading in both the men's and women's team title races and have golfers in top spot on both of the individual leaderboards.
The Thunderbirds posted a 12-under-par gross score on the men's side on Day 1, led by individual leader Russell Howlett. Manitoba sits six shots back in second place, while the defending champion UFV Cascades are in third at -2.
On the women's side, it was Grace Bell leading the way for UBC as the Thunderbirds (E) jumped out to a 14-stroke lead after 18 holes. The UBC Okanagan Heat are in second spot with a six shot advantage on the Victoria Vikes.
Full Day 1 Results
Howlett got off to a good start on Monday and finished off a bogey-free round of 66 to take the lead in the men's individual standings on Day 1. Howlett opened the championship with a birdie at the first and carded another at the fourth before posting back-to-back birdies on six and seven to finish the front nine four-under-par. The first-year Thunderbird would add two more birdies on the back nine to finish the day at -6.
Victoria's Robin Conlan and Manitoba's Cameron McIntyre are right on Howlett's heels after both shooting 67 to sit tied for second at five under. Conlan eagled the par-5 sixth, while McIntyre finished the day with seven birdies. Conlan tied for 11th at the 2019 Championship while McIntyre finished tied for 20th.
Fraser Valley's Jackson Jacob rounds out the top four after posting a four-under 68 on Day 1. Jacob opened the Championship with five birdies on the first six holes to shoot a 31 on the opening nine.
A steady first round from UBC's Grace Bell has the first-year Thunderbird golfer in top spot on the women's side after 18 holes. Bell shot a one-under 71 to card a one-shot lead over teammate Bo Brown. The Calgary, Alta. native birdied the opening three holes and finished the front nine with at -1 after a pair of bogeys. Bell finished the round with 11 straight pars including a clean scorecard on the back nine.
Bo Brown finished the opening round in second place. Brown's even-par round of 72 featured six birdies and six bogeys.
A third UBC golfer appears among the leaders in Una Chou. Chou eagled the first hole and went on the finished the round with a one-over score of 73.
Rounding out the top four was Victoria's Sukriti Harjai. The third-year Vike, who finished ninth at the 2019 Championship, posted a two-over par 74 to lead the Vikes on Day 1.
