EDMONTON - Noah Philp carried his stellar play from the second half into the post-season, as his five points powered the top-seeded Golden Bears to a 6-2 win over the Calgary Dinos in Game 1 of their CW semifinal series.
Luc Smith also scored a pair, with Grayson Pawlenchuk, Matt Fonteyne, and Wyatt McLeod also scoring for Alberta, who take a 1-0 series lead in their best-of-three clash with the Dinos.
The win for the Bears is also their 33rd-straight over Calgary in conference playoff action, a streak dating back to 1996.
Nick Schneider stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced, earning a win in his first playoff start for Alberta. Dino starter Brodan Salmond didn't fare as well, getting pulled early in the second after allowing four goals on 12 shots.
Cal Stankowski stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced in relief.
The Bears dominated Game 1 for all but three minutes, with Calgary opening the scoring just under180 seconds in. Kaden Elder potted his second goal of the post-season, giving Calgary an early lead.
However, it was all Alberta after that, with the Bears scoring four unanswered, chasing Salmond from the Dinos net.
Pawlenchuk tied the game eight minutes in, before Smith scored both of his goals 40 seconds part, both on the powerplay, giving Alberta a 3-1 lead after 20.
Philp's beauty of a goal just 24 seconds into the second gave the Bears a 4-1 edge.
Tyson Upper gave Calgary life just six minutes later, beating a sprawling Schneider to cut into the Alberta lead.
Matt Fonteyne restored the Bears three-goal lead late in the second, beating Stankowski off a deflected shot.
