SWIM: Two record broken as Dino Women and T-Bird Men take early lead
November 22, 2019
LETHBRIDGE - Two records fell and the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings played out as posted with the University of Calgary women's swim team and UBC Thunderbirds men's team taking early leads in the team standings following day one of the Canada West Championships hosted in Lethbridge, Alberta.
DAY 1 RESULTS
The Calgary Dinos women sit atop the team standings with 221 points and are followed closely by the defending Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds (213.50). Sitting in third is the Victoria Vikes with 125 points.
On the men's side, the T-Birds (181) hold a narrow three point lead over the Dinos (178) and the Vikes sit in third with 139 points.
The Championship opened with a bang with two records falling in the preliminary session. UBC's Hoi Lam Tam broke the 50-metre butterfly record by 1/100th of a second and was followed up by Victoria's Danielle Hanus breaking the 50-metre backstroke record.
In the finals, Tam bettered her mark from earlier in the day en route a gold medal in the butterfly, with a time of 26.79. In the same race, Calgary Dinos teammates Laura Albers and Samiha Mohsen finished in a dead heat for the silver medal.
While Hanus swam to a gold in the backstroke, she could not better her time from earlier in the day but the finals time would have also broken the previous record.
Manitoba star Kelsey Wog continued to add to her Canada West medal haul, narrowly missing on a new Canada West record in the 50-metre breaststroke, missing her own mark by only 3/100th of a second.
On the men's side, on the strength of a relay win and three individual medals, the Thunderbirds were able to hold the Dinos off for the early win.
The foursome of Brodie Young, Alexander Pratt, Matthew Meuleman and Dmitriy Lim won the 800-metre relay by nearly six seconds to pick up 40 important points for the six-time defending Canada West Champions.
Lim also took home a gold medal in the 50-metre butterfly to lead the T-Birds. Jaren LeFranc and Hau-Li Fan each picked up silver medals on day one.
Looking to keep pace with the T-Birds, the Dinos point total was aided by a podium sweep in the 50-metre backstroke. Robert Hill touched the wall first, followed by Anders Klein and Daniel Gerlach.
Canada West Swimming Championship action continues November 23 with heats starting at 10:00 a.m. Mountain Time, while finals start at 5:00 p.m. Finals will be webcast live by pay-per-view on canadawest.tv, presented by Co-op.
