SWIM: Tight battle for team titles following day two in Lethbridge
November 23, 2019
LETHBRIDGE - With historical swimming powers, UBC Thunderbirds and Calgary Dinos, going toe-to-toe, results from day two of the Canada West Championships has set up an exciting third and final day of swimming in Lethbridge and both team titles are far from decided.
Following a win in the men's 4 x100 freestyle relay, the defending Canada West Champion UBC Thunderbirds moved into a tie for first place with the Calgary Dinos with 464 points. The Victoria Vikes sit third with 305 points and just behind in fourth sits the Alberta Golden Bears (238).
With 19 Canada West men's titles in their history, the T-Birds will look for a big day three and strive to tie the Dinos for the most in Canada West history with a 20th title.
After trailing by only 7.5 points after day one, the Thunderbird women have moved into the lead through 24 events thanks to four gold medal performances. With 552.5 points, the T-Birds only hold a 22.5 point lead with one day to go. Sitting in third place is the Victoria Vikes (319), followed by the Alberta Pandas (176.5).
Following a record breaking day one for Victoria's Danielle Hanus, she was back at it on day two breaking the 100 metre butterfly record in the morning heats again today with a time of 58.45 seconds. She took home another gold medal in the evening session and for the second day in a row she broke the previous Canada West record in the finals but not her heat time from the morning.
Manitoba's Kelsey Wog continued to rewrite the record book, breaking her own record in the 100 breaststroke en route to another gold medal with a time of 1:05.07. Not done there, in the relay, her opening leg of the 4 x 100 free relay broke the conference 100 metre record.
It was also a record setting day for the host Lethbridge Pronghorns men's team, picking up the program's first ever relay silver medal, edging out the Calgary Dinos in the 4 x 100 free relay.
While no men's records fell on day two, the Dinos and T-Birds put forth plenty of excitement - flip-flopping places after nearly every race and with the Pronghorns sneaking in for the silver medal in the relay the Thunderbirds gold and 40 points allowed them to sit tied with seven events to go.
UBC picked up four gold medals to go along with two silver medals with Nicolas Duke, Jaren LeFranc and Alexander Pratt picking up individual gold medals. The Dinos snatched seven medals but only one gold medal, thanks to Robert Hill's win in the 100 metre butterfly. Hill also claimed a individual silver medal.
Canada West Swimming Championship action continues November 24 with heats starting at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time, while finals start at 3:00 p.m. Finals will be webcast live by pay-per-view on www.canadawest.tv, presented by Co-op.
