TWU repeats as women’s champion while Calgary captures men’s title for the first time since 2012

WINNIPEG – Three more championship records were seton day 2 of the 2015 Canada West track and field championship,after three records established on day 1, at the fast facility atthe James Daly Fieldhouse at the Max Bell Centre at the Universityof Manitoba.
In the team standings, Trinity Western Spartans defendtheir women's team title as they cruised to 39 point win oversecond place Calgary as they reached the century mark with 100points scored. On the men's side Calgary earned the first men'stitle since 2012 when they registered 84 points and were ahead ofsecond place and host Manitoba with 70.
All athletes meeting the CIS standard plus the top twofinishers at the conference championship will advance to the 2015CIS T&F championships, which will be held March 12-14 and willbe hosted by the University of Windsor.
For the women, Trinity had three individual gold medalperformances and another relay gold to dominate the second day ofcompetition.
In the high jump, a familiar name was at the top of asTrinity Western's Emma Nuttall became a three-time conferencechampion in this event with a jump of 1.73m. Also with theSpartans, last year's triple medalist and Outstanding Female FieldPerformer Sabrina Nettey won the triple jump, and was part of 1-2finish with teammate Claudette Allen, with a leap of 12.20m andthis was her second medal of this year's meet after a third in thelong jump on day one.
Later in the day, Sarah Inglis broke the 1500mchampionship record with a time of 4:16.84 – smashing a 34year old record set in 1981 conference championship by Debbie Scottof Victoria in a time of 4:19.96. Inglis is now a two-time winnerat the conference level in this event and also won silver in 100mon day one of this year's event. Trinity went 1-2-3 in the1500m.
Third year Alberta sprinter Leah Walkeden blazed to a newconference championship record in the women's 60m with a time of7.47, besting the old mark of 7.51 set by Amonn Nelson of Calgaryin 2011 on the same track.
In the women's 600m, fourth year Rachel Francois fromVictoria finished first for the second time at this Championshipwhen she finished two seconds ahead of second place in a time of1:30.17. Francois also won the 1000m on day one. In the weightthrow, Saskatchewan's Olena Olenick won with a toss of17.37m.
In the 4x200m relay final, Alberta won a tight race with atime of 1:39.40 while Trinity salted away the team title with agold in the last track event of the championship with a first inthe 4x400m relay in a time of 3:49.42.
On the men's events, Calgary surged to the title on thestrength of two more individual wins plus sweeping both relayevents while steadily producing points in all events on the finalday.
Garrett King of Calgary bounced back from a tough 300mrace on day one and had an incredible last lap kick to capture the600m title in a time of 1:19.99. Later in the day, the Dinos hadanother gold when Roman Justinen won the 1500m after nipping theline in first in a time of 3:54.59. In 4x200m relay, Calgarycaptured the title in a tight three way race and won in a time of1:27.70. The Dinos swept the men relays on day two when they werealso first in the 4x400m with a time of 3:16.80.
The reigning CIS rookie of the Year Aaron Hernandez ofLethbridge won his second consecutive Canada West championshiptriple jump title with a leap of 15.50m. Also with Lethbridge,Peter Millman, last year's Male Field Athlete of the Yearaward recipient, was a double gold medallist at this year'schampionship after another first in the shot put with a throw of17.23m along with his first in the weight toss on dayone.
In the men's 60m, Tevaughn Campbell won a competitivefinal with a finish of 6.82 to earn his second conference title(2012) in this event. The Alberta duo-athlete, played football inthe fall, and second year pole vaulter Nathan Filipek won a hotlycontested event with a vault of 4.93m.
To end the two day event, Manitoba Bisons second year highjumper Alhaji Mansaray gave the home crowd a reason to cheer loudlyas he leapt to a new championship record with a high jump mark of2.17 (old record was set last year by Regina's Jeremy Eckert at2.16).
Track andField Notes:Over the two day event,six conference championship track and field records wereestablished as women and men competed in 17 events apiece. On dayone, Victoria in the women's 4x800m relay and men's 4x800m relayplus Victoria's Thomas Riva in the men's 1000m while on day two,Leah Walkeden of Regina in the women's 60m, Sarah Inglis of TrinityWestern in the women's 1500m and Manitoba's Alhaji Mansaray in themen's high jump.
