T&F: Records fall on opening day of CW Championships
February 21, 2020
SASKATOON - Both Michelle Harrison and Karson Lehner broke Canada West Track and Field Championship records on Friday night in the Field House during Day 1 of the 2020 conference championship at the University of Saskatchewan.
Harrison and Lehner, both of the Saskatchewan Huskies, set their records in the 60-metre hurdles and 300-metre race respectively. For Harrison, she was able to knock down a record that had stood since 2006-07 when it was set by Jessica Zelinka of the Calgary Dinos.

"I got out really well in the final which is nice, because the start is my weakest point of the race and then it just all went by so fast and I'm happy with the end result," said Harrison. "It feels really good to set the record, to see my hard work pay off and this is a big stepping stone for my goals during the outdoor season"
Two teams separated themselves from the pack in the men's standings after the opening day, the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Calgary Dinos jumped out to a lead with 67 points followed by the Huskies (59). Further back are the Regina Cougars and Alberta Golden Bears both with 28 points but with only seven events accounted for, a lot could change on Day 2.
The Huskies lead the women's standings, accumulating 86 points on Day 1 to sit in first place. The Alberta Pandas hold down the silver medal spot with 63 points, while the Dinos (54.5) and Cougars (53) sit waiting in the wings to jump up the table.
Other notable medalists on Day 1 included Trinity Western's Grace Konrad, Lethbridge's Sandra Latrace, and Alberta's Rachel Hyink who all defended their Canada West titles in the 300-metre, long jump and pole vault respectively.
Day 2 of the Canada West championship gets underway at 10:45 am CST at the Field House in Saskatoon and can be watched live on Canada West TV Presented by Co-op.
