T&F: Pistol to sound on CW Championships
March 15, 2022
CALGARY - The wait is just about over, with the University of Manitoba set to host the 2022 Canada West Track & Field Championships, Friday (March 18) and Saturday (March 19), at the James Daly Fieldhouse in Winnipeg.
This marks the return of the conference's track and field championships following its cancellation in 2021 due to the impact of COVID-19. The most recent Canada West Track & Field Championships took place in February 2020, at the University of Saskatchewan.
"The fact that we are able to hold a championship again after being on hold for two years is very exciting for all teams involved," states Claude Berube, Manitoba's head coach of track and field. "Athletes, coaches and staff have been working hard to get back to this championship and are looking forward to what will no doubt be an exciting meet."
Student-athletes from across the conference are competing for medals, as well as the opportunity to qualify for the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships, March 31 - April 2 at Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, N.B.
The full lineup of events includes sprint and distance races (60m, 300m, 600m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 3,000m), hurdles (60m), relays (4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m), long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, weight throw, heptathlon and pentathlon.
The 2020 Canada West Track & Field Championships saw three new records set, tied for most in a single conference championship meet since 2014.
"The Canada West Track & Field Championships has always been one of the major highlight meets on a yearly basis, with the athletes being able to compete in this competition again, we are expecting some great results," Berube adds. "The University of Manitoba Bisons are thrilled to be the host site for the resuming of these great Championships."
Manitoba last hosted the conference championships in 2018, where the host team had a terrific showing, placing second and third, respectively, in the men's and women's overall standings. Propelled by a supportive crowd, the Bisons captured individual medals of all colours, including two gold.
"The University of Manitoba Track & Field program is always excited to host the Canada West Championships as it gives us an opportunity to showcase our team, our facility and the ability that the Bison Sports department puts into hosting a great Championship," Berube notes.
"The Track & Field community in Manitoba is also very excited to watch elite level competition and see the atmosphere that this level of competition can bring into the building. Young athletes come to watch the competition and aspire to be part of these championships in the future. Our alumni is also proud of the program they contributed to in the past and are big supporters of the team. This meet always create an electric feeling in the building that gets people excited about our sport."
The Bisons have a storied track and field history, winning 13 Canada West championships (nine men's, four women's). Saskatchewan is the all-time leader in both women's and men's conference titles, with 21 and 17, respectively. The Huskies are also defending women's champs, while Calgary is the reigning champion in men's competition.
Canada West's student-athletes are in peak form after competing in meets over the last few months, including just a couple weeks ago at the Jim Daly Classic Bisons 2.0 in Winnipeg, where Saskatchewan finished first in the overall combined standings, followed by Manitoba in second place, and Alberta rounding out the top three.
