The Huskies women had a strong day across the board, led by fifth-year Courtney Hufsmith, who won gold in the 3000-metre and helped her 4x800-metre relay team achieve the same.
"The win felt good," said Hufsmith. "I've had a bit of a rough season, I feel like everyone kind of has with COVID - we've all dealt with a lot of stuff this season - so it felt good to come out and run the race."
With 93 points, the Huskies will be chased on Saturday by the Calgary Dinos (74 points) and Alberta Pandas (70 points). Other highlights for the Saskatchewan women included a one-two finish for Avery Pearson and Kaitlyn Harrison in the 1000-metre.
"We've won ever since I've been in second year and now we're coming in with a team that's really deep," said Hufsmith. "Before, we had a few select individuals who would collect all our points but now, pretty much everyone's getting points on this team, which is great."
The men's track and field conference banner, meanwhile, will be up for grabs on Saturday. The Huskies lead with 54 points but have the host Manitoba Bisons and Victoria Vikes (46 points) right on their heels. The Alberta Golden Bears and Lethbridge Pronghorns are also in the mix with 33 and 31 points, respectively.
Highlighting the day for the Huskies men was a win in an exciting 60-metre hurdles final, as Kieran Johnston won with a time of 8.41 seconds. Silver medallist Adam Andres of Manitoba beat out Saskatchewan's Elliott Klassen by just four thousandths of a second.
Andres wasn't the only rookie Bisons athlete to medal on Friday, as the hosts set the tone in the men's long jump, where Graham Hutchison-Campbell put down his gold medal jump of 6.88 metres on his third attempt, narrowly beating out Saskatchewan's Landon Kohle (6.86m).
Other Friday highlights included a lightning fast 300-metre dash, where Alberta's Austin Cole posted a 33.69 to win, edging out Trinity Western's Daniel Earles (34.58). Cole was also the Canada West gold winner in the 2019 event and has great memories of Manitoba's fieldhouse, where he set a U SPORTS and Canada U23 record that same year at nationals.
Lethbridge, meanwhile, did damage in the men's weight throw, sweeping the podium. Andreas Troschke bested his teammates Xavier Crosby and Brayden Klippenstein with a winning throw of 18.16 metres.
Day 2 of the Canada West Championships starts at 11 a.m. CDT in Winnipeg and can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
