March 19, 2022

Trailing by eight points after Day 1, the Manitoba Bisons men took advantage of a deep, talented roster to hold off a late push from the Saskatchewan Huskies, who had their eyes on both banners. Thanks to a silver-bronze finish from Jordan Soufi and Brian Lewis in a blazing fast 60-metre dash, along with a gold from first-year Daxx Turner in the triple jump, the Herd were able to win by just 13.5 points.
"It's pretty exciting," said Turner. "The win is definitely up there. Everything for me has been just high school and nationals, so it's exciting to have some performances at a different level. First Canada West, to win it as a rookie, that definitely checks off a box."
Also finishing fourth in the high jump, Turner was named the Male Rookie of the Year at the post-meet awards ceremony.
Manitoba finished with 140 points, with the Huskies in second with 126.50 and the Alberta Golden Bears just behind with 103.5.
An outstanding rookie was also central to the success of the Huskies women, who take home their 22nd conference banner. After earning two golds in the 1000-metre and the 4x800-metre relay on Friday, Avery Pearson won the 600-metre and helped her squad win the 4x400-metre relay, finishing a great weekend for the CW Female Rookie of the Year.
The Huskies ran away with the banner, earning 178 points to second-place Alberta's 126.5 and third-place Calgary's 119.
Dinos shined individually on Day 2, though. Middle distance runner Eric Lutz shattered a Canada West record in the men's 1500-metre, lowering the bar over two seconds to 3:47.43.
Lutz, who also earned a gold in the 1000-metre, was named the conference's Male Track Athlete of the Year and earned the Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Saskatchewan's Kendra Farmer was the female Student-Athlete Community Service Award recipient.
The Female Field Athlete of the Year also came from the Dinos, as Osereme Omosun won gold in the weight throw and silver in the shot put. The Male Field Athlete of the Year was Trinity Western's Ethan Foster, who won gold in the demanding heptathlon and bronze in the long jump.
Alberta's Catharina Kluyts was named the Female Track Athlete of the Year and her win in the 60-metre hurdles was named the Performance of the Meet. Beating out a pair of Bisons, Regina's Usheoritse Itsekiri's mind-bending 6.66 in the 60-metre dash was the Male Performance of the Meet.
Two final highlights from Day 2 were the 4x200m relays, where Canada West records fell in both races. The Saskatchewan women's team of Gracie Anderson, Ashlyn Mooney, Kendra Farmer and Paige Willems raced in 1:37.80, beating a record set by the dogs in 2019-20. On the men's side, a stacked Alberta team of Austin Cole, Josh Li, Justin Rose and Evan Essapa ran in 1:26.74, edging out a Huskies record that stood for six years.
All qualified Canada West athletes now look ahead to the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, which take place at UNB @ Saint John from March 31 to April 2.
