T&F: Incredible Performances at Canada West Championship; SSK & MAN win Team Awards

SASKATOON, SK - The Manitoba men's team and Saskatchewan women's teams are your 2023 Canada West Track & Field Champions.
The Huskies head Coach Jason Reindl was proud of his team's performance after winning their fifth straight Canada West title. "Proud and pride. The women's team did an exceptional job. They all understood being at home, what that meant and the challenge that came with that but overall great execution from our athletes, coaches, trainers, and team collective."
On the men's side it was Manitoba's head coach Claude Berube who was very happy with his team's performance. "They just came in and performed consistently, performed to what they are capable of, what their rankings were and they believed. I think winning last year put some confidence in them, and this year they knew what they could do and came out and performed."
The University of Saskatchewan took top spot in the women's competition, with 171 points. The Alberta Pandas took second place with 142 points, and Calgary Dinos came in at third with 91 points. For the men's team, it was the Manitoba Bisons who took top spot with 148.5 points, followed by the Alberta Golden Bears with 128.5 and the Saskatchewan Huskies with 102.5 points.
Canada West gave out their major awards after competition wrapped up. The University of Lethbridge's Jinaye Shomachuk was named Outstanding Performance of the Meet thanks to her incredible weight throw of 18.90m, nearly three metres further then the second-place throw. On the men's side, Usheoritse Itsekiri from the University of Regina took home the Outstanding Performance of the Meet Award with a time of 6.65 seconds in the men's 60m race.
Next up for these athletes is a trip back to Saskatoon for the U SPORTS Track & Field Championship on March 9-11, 2023 at the Saskatoon Field House. Tickets are available at HuskieTickets.com.
