University of Regina women's basketball head coach Dave Taylor announced Friday that guard Kianna Wiens has committed to the Cougars for her final season of U SPORTS eligibility.
Originally from Regina, Wiens graduated from Michael A. Riffel High School in 2017 and played for four seasons at Trinity Western in Langley, B.C. At TWU, Wiens developed into a high-scoring guard who put up 12.5 points per game in her third season and upped that average to 13 per contest in 2021-22.
Wiens played professionally last season, averaging 7.5 points in 26 games played for Jolly Jumpers Tubbergen in the top division of Netherlands.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be adding Kianna as she fits a pressing need and gives us a veteran presence at the point guard position," Taylor said. "It's rare when you can add someone with four years of Canada West experience like Kianna has, and the fact that it's a homecoming for her makes it extra special for our program. She's a high-character player that will be great in the community, and on the court she's a perfect fit for our style of play given her three-point shooting and her talent in the pick-and-roll game."
The commitment of Wiens gives the Cougars four new players for the 2023-24 campaign. Dakota Collegiate wing Kyu Fust, Kelowna Secondary forward Ryenn Schutz, and Riffel guard Alexyn Ward will also be joining the program in the fall.
Wiens will enroll in the U of R's Faculty of Education.
