CW Championship Day 1: #3 Alberta, #2 Calgary top in women's, #4 Alberta men's undefeated
CALGARY – After Day 1 of the 2014 Canada West wrestlingchampionship, hosted by the University of Calgary, the battle fortop spot remains between No. 3 Alberta and No. 2 Calgary on thewomen's side. The No. 2 Wesmen are the only undefeated men's teamthus far.
Alberta's women's teams remain undefeated throughout Day 1 of thecompetition with seven Golden Bears and Pandas with perfect recordsincluding Michael Asselstine (61kg), Cody Osborne (65kg), DrewBelanger (68kg), Daniel Oloumi (100kg) on the men's side. HayleyThomas (51kg), Cholena Horne (59kg) and Brandy Perry (67kg) kepttheir team undefeated through three rounds.
The No. 2 Calgary Dinos women's team also didn't give up anymatches today, going 3-0 with just two rounds left of competition.Five Dinos are undefeated including Josee Tremblay (48kg), CaraNania (55kg), Temitope Ogunjimi (63kg), Hilary Goble (72kg), HollyEllsworth-Clark (82kg). The Dinos men's team gave up a team winover Saskatchewan, but defeated No. 1 Fraser Valley overall.Spenser Burk (65kg), Tyler Buchan (68kg) and Connor Hodgins (76kg)kept the DInos afloat after Day 1.
The Winnipeg Wesmen men's team was the only team to go undefeatedtoday, defeating both the Alberta Golden Bears and the ReginaCougars while the women's team dropped all three rounds. MitchellBerenz (65kg), Brock Munro (72kg), Aleksandr Soronov (76kg), BenChristopher (82kg), and Kyle Nguyen (120 kg) didn't drop amatch
The Fraser Valley Cascades enter their first-ever Canada WestChampionships. Just two of their eight wrestlers gave up a matchover the course of the day. The top-ranked team in the countryhopes to get back on track after falling 26-24 to Calgary. On theirwomen's side, the Cascades have yet to win a single bout.
Regina has four competitors that went undefeated today, includingIndhyra Linares (59kg) and Kayla Brodner (67kg) on the women's sideand Nathan Schwartz (57kg) and Lucas Hoffert (68kg) on the men'sside. Regina's women's team follows closely behind Alberta andCalgary with a 2-1 record.
A number of Huskies from Saskatchewan's men's team have yet tolose a round at the championships including Josh Bodnarchuk (54kg),Dylan Bray (57kg), Malcolm Meekins (72kg), Andrew Johnson (82kg),and Jacob Philips (120kg). Annie Monteith (48kg) and Laryssa Barry(55kg) helped Saskatchewan defeat Fraser Valley and tally a teamwin today.
Day 2 will begin at 9 am tomorrow with the final matches on themen's side beginning at 2:30pm. Banner presentations will followthe final rounds.
