Plenty of perfect records after Day 1 of CW Wrestling Championships

SASKATOON - Five University of Regina Cougars and five University of Saskatchewan Huskies remain undefeated on the men's side after Day 1 of the 2017 Canada West Wrestling Championship at the PAC in Saskatoon, while the Huskies have four undefeated wrestlers on the women's side.
Saskatchewan's returning gold medalists Josh Bodnarchuk (57 kg) and Andrew Johnson (82 kg) each went 2-0 on the first day of competition. Rookie Zachary Bieber (54 kg), third-year Nathan Galan (65 kg) and fifth-year Donovan Dale (120 kg) join the duo. The Cougars only returning gold medalist Gaelon Malloy (82 kg) looks to continue to defend his medal after winning in superiority, while Daniel Amberson (54 kg), Joshua Zimroz (57 kg), Lucas Hoffert (68 kg) and Brett Kryger (76 kg) also opened the weekend with wins for Regina.
Winning all three duals, the four undefeated Saskatchewan women all sailed through Day 1 competition without having a single point scored against. The group is led by reigning gold medalist Katie Dutchak (48 kg), Alison Mcphee (67 kg), Kiera Prior (82 kg) and Devyn Mandershied (55 kg) also tallied perfect records without a single point scored against.
In round one of women's competition, the Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 25-10, Saskatchewan defeated the Alberta Pandas 24-14 and the reigning Canada West champion Calgary Dinos won 26-13 over Regina. In the next round, Alberta defeated UFV 28-1, while Saskatchewan and Calgary each continued to be strong. The Huskies won 23-10 over provincial-foe Regina, while Calgary defeated Winnipeg 26-10. In the final round, Alberta narrowly edged the Dinos 17-15, Saskatchewan defeated the Cascades 34-3 and Regina defeated Winnipeg 20-19.
On the men's side, the Golden Bears started the day with a 33-16 win over the Dinos, while Saskatchewan defeated the Wesmen 34-16 and the Cougars won 46-8 over the Cascades. The Dinos rebounded with a 44-9 win over Fraser Valley in Round 2, while the Golden Bears edged Saskatchewan 25-23 and Regina defeated Winnipeg 28-25.
