SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies captured the women's wrestling title for the first time in history, while the University of Alberta Golden Bears won the men's side Saturday at the 2017 Canada West Championship hosted in Saskatoon .
Saskatchewan accumulated 36 points en route to the first-ever team victory in school history. In the run to the team title, the Huskies captured three gold medals and two bronze. Katie Dutchak (48 kg), Alison Mcphee (67 kg) and Kiera Prior (82 kg) all stood on top of the podium. Devyn Mandershied (55 kg) and Laryssa Barry (59 kg) each finished with bronze. It was the second straight Canada West gold medal for Dutchak and first for Mcphee and Prior.
The defending champion Calgary Dinos finished in second - four points behind the Huskies at 32. The Alberta Pandas (30), Regina Cougars (30), Winnipeg Wesmen (22) and UFV Cascades (9) rounded out the women's standings.
Alberta scored 50 points for the men's team title. It's the Golden Bears' fourth championship win in five years and 11th total, including a shared title with Saskatchewan in 1982-83.
The Huskies, who won the title in 2016, finished second with 46 points. The Dinos finished third with 44 points, while the Regina Cougars (41), Winnipeg Wesmen (26), and UFV Cascades (16) rounded out the men's team standings.
To secure the championship, the Golden Bears captured medals in six of the 11 men's weight classes.
Melvin Arciaga (61 kg), Aidan Mckeage (68 kg) and Marcus Peterson (72 kg) each won gold medals for the Golden Bears. Johnny Vo (57 kg) and Miles Kent (76 kg) captured silver and Nicholas Goleniec (90-kg) won bronze.
The top three finishers from each weight class qualify for the U SPORTS Championship February 24-25 hosted by the Winnipeg Wesmen.
Saskatchewan's Dutchak, Alberta's Peterson named Most Outstanding Wrestlers
Undefeated wrestlers Katie Dutchak of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and Marcus Peterson of the University of Alberta Golden Bears were crowned Canada West Most Outstanding Wrestlers at a banquet in Saskatoon following the Championships.
It is the second straight year Dutchak has won the conference major award. Dutchak won her five matches at the dual-format championship without having a single point scored against her in the 48 kg class. Peterson, who wrestled in the 72 kg class, only had one point scored against him.
Both Dutchak and Peterson helped their teams to the championship title with their gold medal performances.
Rookie of the Year awards went to Fraser Valley's Karla Godinez Gonzalez on the women's side and Calgary's Conlan Foy for the men. Foy won a silver medal in the 65-kg, while Godinez Gonzalez won bronze.
For their outstanding athletic ability, contribution in the community and classroom success, Winnipeg's Kyle Nguyen and Alisha Kaegi were named U SPORTS nominees for the Student-Athlete Community Service Award.
Nguyen claimed the bronze medal in the 120 kg weight class. Nguyen volunteers at numerous events including Imagine Marathon, raising awareness for mental health in Manitoba. He is involved in the Wesmen's learn to read program. He also works with visually impaired athletes through Manitoba blind sport and is a volunteer coach for youth wrestling through various programs throughout the city of Winnipeg.
Kaegi works with imagine Marathon for Mental Health Awareness, volunteering around the event. Alisha also spends her time working with the Manitoba Aboriginal Sport & Recreation council at various sporting events during the year. She also spends a lot of time in Winnipeg schools through the Wesmen's Learn to Read program and as a volunteer teaching assistant. Through teaching as well as Manitoba Blind Sport and Special Olympics Manitoba, she has volunteered her time to work with special needs children.
Taking Coach of the Year honours on the men's side is Alberta head coach Owen Dawkins, while Daniel Olver of the Saskatchewan Huskies won the Coach of the Year for the women's side.
