WVB: Cougars end season with 3-1 win over Winnipeg

EDMONTON - Ending their 2022 season in style, the Regina Cougars earned a 3-1 win (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18), Saturday afternoon at Saville Community Sports Centre.
The win gives the Cougars a 1-2 record during the first weekend of playoffs in Edmonton, while Winnipeg heads home winless with an 0-3 record. Neither team will advance to next weekend's second round, with Alberta and UBC each owning 2-0 records entering their match this evening.
Bailey Balaberda led Regina with a match-high 13 kills, with Jessica Lerminiaux adding 12, and Katie House adding 11. Cassadi Klapak recorded 37 assists and 11 digs in an impressive performance.
Ashleigh Laube led Winnipeg with 11 kills on 34 attempts, with Selva Planincic and Emily Yaeger scoring 10 each.
The two evenly matched teams started the match with back-and-forth action, before a lengthy serving run by Regina gave them momentum. Trailing 16-15, Regina won nine-straight points on Klapac's serve, en route to a 25-18 first set win.
The Wesmen bounced back in the second, tying the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 set win. Leading Winnipeg were four aces and four team blocks, coupled with the Cougars struggling on offence, handing Winnipeg eight attack errors.
Defensive momentum switched sides in the third, with Regina sending back five team blocks, and firing in three aces of their own. Three kills from Devyn Grimsrud helped Regina earn a 25-22 win.
The Cougars stayed efficient in the fourth, recording just a single attacking error on 41 attempts, winning the match with a 25-18 set win.
