MHKY: Bears capture 29th CW title in dominant fashion
March 19, 2022
EDMONTON - The Alberta Golden Bears extended their reign atop Canada West, beating UBC 7-0 in Game 2 of the Canada West Final, capturing their fourth conference title in five years, and 29th Canada West title overall.
It's also the Bears 56th total Western Canadian conference title, with their first coming in 1934. The Bears are now 4-0 vs UBC in the Canada West Final, having earned titles over the T-Birds in 1975, 1977, and 1978.
Both Alberta and UBC will represent CW in two weeks, at the 2022 University Cup, hosted by the Acadia Axemen.
After a tighter 4-2 win in Game 1, the Bears utterly dominated Game 2, with six different goal scorers finding the scoresheet in Game 2.
Josh Prokop scored a pair, with Gary Haden, Matt Fonteyne, Tyler Preziuso, Nolan Volcan, and Ethan Sakowich also scoring for Alberta. Taz Burman stopped all 29 shots he faced, picking up his second win of the 2022 post-season.
Two years after stealing a semifinal series win for UBC over Alberta, T-Birds goalie Rylan Toth couldn't match that level, allowing seven goals on 32 shots.
As they did in the opening game of the CW Final, Alberta opened the scoring early in the first, as Haden banged in his own rebound just five minutes in.
Fonteyne doubled the lead just four minutes later, before Preziuso beat Toth on a breakaway to give Alberta a 3-0 lead after one.
The Bears scored three more times in the second, with Volcan beating Toth from in tight, before Prokop scored a pair in the final five minutes of the second.
Trying to find any spark in Game 2, the T-Birds were unable to generate many high-danger scoring chances on six powerplay opportunities, failing to score on the man advantage.
Sakowich iced the Bears title win with his first goal as a Golden Bear, beating a screened Toth from the right point.
The 2022 University Cup will begin on March 31st in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, as the Bears look for a record 17th University Cup title, while UBC will aim for their first ever.
